In the article, published by *JACC: Cardiovascular Imaging* in August 2008, Huggins et al. conducted an analysis of 6,006 coronary artery disease (CAD) patients who participated in the AMPED (Access to Medications, Prevention and Education for Dialysis) program, which was implemented in 2003 in Kentucky, and found that the program participants received fewer hospitalizations, lower hospital costs, and a lower one-year mortality rate than non-participants. Participants in the AMPED program received medication management, lipid management and guidance on healthy eating, smoking cessation, and controlling hypertension and diabetes. They also received patient education and exercise counseling. For patients who received AMPED services and demonstrated appropriate adherence, hospitalizations for CAD decreased by 23 percent and the cost of hospitalization decreased by 33 percent. The one-year mortality rate was also lowered, by 18 percent. *JAHA* (Jan. 30, 2008) Using technologies to address issues of health disparity for underserved populations, Charles Huggins, MD, MPH, professor of medicine and cardiology, led a team that described the first statewide patient navigation program in the United States.
